HOLLIDAYSBURG – Claysburg-Kimmel got off to a fantastic start with a big defensive stance and a long touchdown pass, but it couldn’t get over a huge night from Moshannon Valley’s Levi Knuth. The junior half-back ran for four touchdowns and 209 yards on 22 carries in the Black Knights’ 28-12 win at Tiger Stadium on Thursday and landed a key tackle on a false punt.

“Moshannon Valley has been a difficult team that we have played with for the past two years”, Claysburg-Kimmel coach Matt Bilchak said. “We were able to make the games at the right time, but tonight they just ran away from us. We liked the way we started. We’ve been talking about starting strong and ending strong all week. We took the start, but we haven’t finished.

Game play: Trailing just 14-6 with 5:51 left in the third quarter, Claysburg-Kimmel attempted a false punt from his own 26-yard line on fourth and 3, but Knuth tackled Pressten Imler, who took a direct snap, for a loss of 4 yards. Knuth ran for his third touchdown three games later to make it 21-6.

“It was huge” Moshannon Valley coach Michael Keith said. “We didn’t send our kicking return team out there thinking they could try it in that situation, and thank goodness we didn’t.”

Player of the game: Knuth, who entered the game with just 73 yards this season in two losses, ran for 209 yards and four touchdowns and made several key defensive saves.

Unsung Hero: David Honan of Moshannon Valley had two kill sacks and caught two passes for 53 yards.

Most important statistic: The Black Knights carried the ball 40 times as a team and rushed for 313 yards.

Keith: “When you’re 0-2 you never feel very confident about anything. But defensively, I felt good. They had a game we were beaten on so I felt we could stick with them defensively. Offensively, I knew we could move the ball. It was about finishing and hitting, and we did it in the second half.

Knuth: “The line did an incredible job opening holes tonight. I saw it and had at least 5 meters to carry. It was a great evening. This is our first victory, but it will not be the last.

Biltchak: “I feel like as a young team we are growing and understanding. It’s just a matter of being consistent. We have big games, and we have opportunities where we can make a game, but we have to take advantage of that, and that’s the next step.

Notable: Claysburg-Kimmel wore camouflage uniforms which was the brainchild of Bilchak’s high school teammate, Sgt. Joey Myers. … Imler, who is 18 today, caught a 68-yard touchdown pass from Bulldogs quarterback Caleb Oakes on a screen pass in the first quarter. … Cole Claycomb of CK topped the scoring with a 50-yard touchdown run on one side with 1:16 to go. … A minute of silence for the victims took place before the match in honor of the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Records: Moshannon Valley (1-2); Claysburg-Kimmel (1-2).

Next week: Moshannon Valley hosts West Branch on September 17th and Bulldogs head to Tussey Mountain the same night.
