Coachella Valley nursing student is fighting for her life after contracting COVID-19 in early August.
Fitri Sho said her 24-year-old daughter, Hanny Virginia, was in a induced coma at JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio.
Hanny’s mother said her daughter had recently made frequent trips to Texas, where she was working towards her master’s degree in nursing. She believes her daughter fell ill during one of her visits to the state, which has seen an increase in coronavirus cases, hospitalizations and deaths.
Most of the condition’s cases involve unvaccinated people. Fitri Sho said her daughter was also among the unvaccinated.
She said she urged Hanny to get the vaccine, but explained that her daughter was afraid of getting sick from the vaccine and that she would receive her first dose after summer school ended.
She added that Hanny “would always get sick” when she received her flu shot.
Fitri Sho now urges all those who have not been vaccinated to do so “before it is too late”.
Once Hanny was infected with COVID-19, her health deteriorated within days. Her symptoms were made worse by her type 1 diabetes.
Her mother said Hanny had always wanted to become a nurse to help others, but now her family and friends are begging the community to come together for her.
Hanny’s longtime neighbor, Jessica Fuentes, spoke of Hanny’s deep connections to the Indio community and surrounding communities.
The aspiring nurse attended John Glenn Middle School as well as California State University San Bernardino.

Fuentes said she was convinced they could hit the $ 20,000 goal, but “just need a little help.”
Fitri Sho cited the thousands of dollars that lung transplant surgery typically costs and said she and her family couldn’t afford it, adding that “it’s a lot of money.”
Hanny is now on a waiting list at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles for his emergency lung transplant.
Her mother said she couldn’t wait to give her daughter the care she desperately needs to get her home.
Doctors overseeing Hanny’s treatment told her mother they were still working on it.
Meanwhile, Hanny’s family and loved ones remain hopeful and believe his chances of survival are good.
Her childhood friend and neighbor, Nadia Fuentes, said that “it is incredibly sad to see her at such a young age go through this very difficult disease to overcome”, she is convinced that Hanny “will arrive on her 25th birthday”, which is a little over two months away.
