Michael Cohen, former personal advocate of President Donald Trump, claims to have discovered millions of new evidence files likely to interest legislators investigating the president.
In a statement released Thursday night, Cohen's lawyer, Lanny Davis, said that "recent public and in camera testimony before congressional committees has opened up new avenues for investigation by the authorities in charge of Law Enforcement and Congress ".
"In fact," Davis continued, "Mr. Cohen has recently obtained a hard drive containing 14 million files from his computers and phones over the last 10 years, which we believe has great value for the various Congressional Monitoring and Investigation Committees ".
Davis said in a letter to Congressional Democrats, obtained by CNN, that his client should have more time before the start of his three-year jail term effective May 6.
"Mr. Cohen needs time, resources, and help to separate confidential and personal documents from these 14 million files so that the rest is available for review by various congressional committees," the lawyers wrote. Cohen, according to CNN.
And in documents submitted to lawmakers by Cohen's lawyers on Thursday, Cohen claimed that Trump had told him to lie to Congress about the end of negotiations on the Trump Tower project in Moscow.
During a public testimony before Congress in February, Cohen said Trump's lawyers "were reviewing and reviewing" his testimony before Congress in 2017 and that Trump "wanted me to lie" on the Trump Tower project.
