It didn’t take a colored bracelet or the mask he wore under his nose for anyone to know Cole Beasley’s vaccination status. The Bills receiver made it clear for weeks, even engaging in social media discussions about the vaccine with his teammates.
Like it or not, Beasley has transformed himself into a spokesperson for unvaccinated players.
While meeting with Bills media on Wednesday, Beasley read a statement he wrote on his cell phone before answering questions. He said he was doing so “out of respect for his teammates and coaches” and would then only deal with football matters.
“I wanted to start off by saying, I’m not anti-or pro-vax. i am a pro choice“Said Beasley.” That being said, the problem that arises is this: information is withheld from players so that a player is swayed in a direction they may not be comfortable with. . When it comes to the health and safety of a player, there must be full transparency regarding vital information in the decision-making process. Without having all the proper information, a player can feel misguided and uncertain about a very personal choice. This makes the player feel unprotected and raises concerns about future health topics and our ability to make informed decisions. When it comes to our overall security, we should know that we know and fully understand that those who are able to help will always do so according to our individual situation. Some people may think that I am selfish by making this an “me” thing. Everything revolves around young players who have no voice and who contact me every day because they are told that if they do not get vaxxed, they will be cut. Teams are being told agents that if they have unvaccinated guys they won’t have the chance to be seen in practice just yet. So, once the non-vaxxed players are cut off, they lose a dream that they have worked their whole life for for a vaccine that has proven not to stop people from contracting COVID as we have seen. Every doctor I’ve been to with questions begins each sentence with “what we know now”, which tells me we don’t know enough. The NFLPA is working to get vaccinated players tested more frequently than the NFL initially said. Many players have been vaccinated with the idea that these rules were already set in stone, and they are not. It makes good sense that if a vaxxed or non-vaxxed player is tested less frequently, the likelihood of a player being taken out for COVID drops dramatically. Regarding player safety, I will conclude by saying that we all want to be safe. For so many NFL players, safety doesn’t just mean avoiding the COVID virus. Our health is the present and the years beyond, which we try to protect with our personal choice while doing everything we have done in our protocol during a very successful 2020 NFL season. “
Beasley claimed that was the end of his opinion on the vaccine. An hour later, however, he tweeted a song he wrote and recorded about immunization titled “I’m Not Like You.” The tweet included the song’s lyrics and said it’s his last tweet until the end of the season.
