Clemson lost for the second time this season and it’s not even October. I’m going to let that sink in after a Saturday that saw the Tigers rock. A putrid offense seemed scoreless against NC State as the Wolfpack had just enough to win the game in overtime.
Texas A&M also bit the dust, becoming physically dominated by Arkansas in a game where the Aggies seemed unable to muster much on offense other than a long touchdown from Isaiah Spiller. The Razorbacks were just a five-point underdog, so winning wasn’t this out of left field, but the way they did it is a particularly tough pill for the Aggies to swallow. In a Top 10 which, if what happened today is a precursor, will not remain so for long.
1. Georgia (4–0)
Last game: beat Vanderbilt 62-0
Next game: at home against Arkansas
The Dawgs beat Vanderbilt about as thoroughly as you’ll ever see in a conference game. They covered the 34.5 point lead at halftime and the most convincing thing about the second half was whether or not the Dores would end up with more total yards than UGA did. made of points (they did –barely). Clemson’s victory looks more fragile than we thought as the Tigers lost, but Georgia continues to impress.
2. Alabama (4–0)
Last game: beat Southern Miss 63-14
Next match: at home against Ole Miss
If Alabama defeats a Group of 5 opponent in the forest and no one is around to watch him, does that make a noise? Well, this one did, as it is an impressive round number compared to unranked opponents and another reminder of Bama’s continued dominance.
The tide has rolled in, certainly feeling no discomfort after the narrow victory at Gainesville last weekend. The Lane Train arrives next week.
3. Oregon (4–0)
Final game: beat Arizona 41-19
Next game: at Stanford
The Ducks did what you’re supposed to do against perhaps the worst team in the Pac-12. They took care of business and, as a bright spot, also recovered world defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux from an injury.
4. Iowa (4-0)
Last game: beat Colorado State 24-14
Next game: in Maryland (Friday)
The Hawkeyes battled with the Rams and for part of the first half it looked like there was a slight upset danger on a wacky Saturday, but they ultimately won. The Hawkeyes didn’t get as much from their running game as they did from their running game, but quarterback Spencer Petras did just enough to get them out of CSU in a 14-point third quarter.
5. Penn State (4-0)
Last game: beat Villanova 38-17
Next game: vs. Indiana
Fourteen points behind by the Wildcats make the score more respectable than it actually was. The Nittany Lions have never been really in danger here. A career-high 401 yards in the air for quarterback Sean Clifford bodes well for next week’s game against Indiana.
6. Cincinnati (3–0)
Last game: beat Indiana 38-24, September 18
Next match: at Notre Dame
7. Oklahoma (4–0)
Final game: beat West Virginia 16-13
Next game: in Kansas State
Well it wasn’t pretty but it was a victory. Hooted birds and chants for the backup quarterback pleased Norman over preseason favorite Heisman Spencer Rattler, but he didn’t end the game with such a poor stat line (26-36, 256 yards and 1 TD). What’s worse about Oklahoma’s offense is the astounding lack of a running game. They had to scratch and claw with defense to beat the Mountaineers at home. Just another night in the Big 12, right?
8. Ohio State (3-1)
Last game: beat Akron 59-7
Next match: at Rutgers
Ohio State has beaten the shit on a state opponent. This is the part you might assume, but a player who leaves their team during the match is not.
Ryan Day declined to comment on the situation after the game, but it’s clear something was wrong for the Buckeyes despite the dominant victory.
9. Notre Dame (4–0)
Final Game: Beat Wisconsin 41-13
Next game: vs. Cincinnati
What a sleepy game through the three quarters got manner Out of control in the fourth quarter after a kick return and several six picks by Marcus Freeman’s defense pushed the Irish to a blowout in the end. Quarterback Jack Coan was injured and Notre Dame had his third string QB to finish the game, but head coach Brian Kelly was optimistic Coan will play next week against the Bearcats.
Kelly overtook the legendary Knute Rockne to topped the Notre Dame all-time winning list with the win.
10. Arkansas (4-0)
Last game: beat Texas A&M 20-10
Next game: in Georgia
In what was arguably the best win of the day all things considered, the Hogs showed incredible proof of concept, thwarting both A&M’s offensive and defensive lines for most of the day. Although quarterback KJ Jefferson missed much of the second half with injury, he came back to the ice to win as Sam Pittman secures a signing victory in charge.
