Anytime it’s supposed to be a “down week” in college football, it’s anything but a down week. It happens over and over again, regardless of the season, and Week 4 of the 2021 campaign was no different. This week has brought us several massive upheavals, with contenders continuing to dominate and style points that have been won or lost in the race to qualify for the college football playoffs.

Alabama’s No.1 took the win over Southern Miss, as did Georgia’s No.2 on the road at Vanderbilt. Other suitors … not so many. No.9 Clemson suffered his second overtime loss of the season to NC State. The Oklahoma No.4 escaped the clutches of West Virginia on a field goal. No.7 Texas A&M fell to No.16 Arkansas in the biggest game of the SEC West season so far.

It’s time to hand over some college football playoff contenders, listed based on Caesars Sportsbook Saturday morning odds. The 16 teams below aren’t technically the only ones that could make the CFP this season, but that’s where we focus our attention as we wait for others to leap to the top of the college football rankings.

As such, expect to see the teams in this column adjust each week and possibly get shorter as the season progresses. You can also check out our forecast college football rankings ahead of the release of the new Top 25 AP on Sunday.
