Assistant is a key part of Google’s app ecosystem. Since its introduction in 2016 with the first Google Pixel smartphones, Google has placed it at the heart of the Pixel experience and of Android in general. And being so important to Google, it just made sense that this would be one of the next apps to get its respective dose of Material You overhaul. A redesign of the Google Assistant, with a dynamic theme, is being deployed.

Google has rolled out Material You redesigns for several of its apps, including Google Keep, Google Photos, and Google Podcasts, so it makes sense that the Google Assistant is next on the list. This Google Assistant hardware overhaul was spotted by XDA-Developers on version 12.37.19.29 of the Google app, on a Google Pixel 3 running Android 12 Beta 5. We were unable to reproduce it on our own device, which suggests that it is a deployment by steps.

As for the redesign itself, it looks pretty tame compared to redesigns from other Google apps. Besides the background color and accents changing to match your wallpaper color, we can also see some button shapes turning into round squares. The rest of the user interface remains the same for the most part.

If you want to check this on your device, keep in mind that you will need a Pixel on the latest beta of Android 12, and even if you have the latest version of the Android app, you may find that Material You is not showing because it appears to be an A / B deployment.
