Johnny Football is back (again).
Johnny Manziel, the former Texas A & M quarterback, winner of the Heisman Trophy, made his debut with the Memphis Express on Sunday night in a match of the American Football Alliance against Birmingham.
Manziel made his debut late in the first half, recalling a few moments of his former dominance on the field, including a 36-yard pass, during an attack that ultimately resulted in a failed attempt.
Manziel would be replaced by starting quarterback Brandon Silvers on the next record.
An introductory press conference was held Tuesday in Memphis for Manziel, who agreed to join the new league a week ago. The former first round pick of Texas A & M dealt with a series of off-field problems during his stints in the NFL and CFL.
"My level of confidence is high," said Manziel at the press conference. "I believe I still have a unique skill set and that I can always play at any level, no matter where."
Manziel's rights to the FAA belonged to the commanders of San Antonio, but they refused to sign it. Through the league's waiver system, it has been awarded to the Express, which has a record record of 1-5.
He joins the Spring League for his inaugural season less than a month after the termination of the CFL contract with the Montreal Alouettes. CFL officials also informed the other eight teams in the league that they would not sign a contract for Manziel if they ever tried to sign it.
