RICHMOND, Ky. (EKU Athletics) – Eastern Kentucky lost their home opener 23-21 to the Indiana State Sycamores on Saturday night in front of 14,173 fans at Roy Kidd Stadium.
EKU took their first lead of the night with 49 seconds remaining when Da’Joun Hewitt capped a 14-play, 80-yard run with a four-yard touchdown to give the Colonels a 21-17 lead.
After Indiana State recovered from a firecracker kick, the Sycamores headed for the EKU 24-yard line. In the last game, INS connected on a 24-yard touchdown pass to claim a 23-21 victory.

The Sycamores quickly gained momentum, immobilizing the Colonels deep in their own territory and harvesting a mismanaged punt attempt to take a 7-0 lead. Malik Owens put EKU on the board in practice that followed, collecting a 10-yard Parker McKinney pass to tie the game with 2:24 left in the first quarter.
Indiana State found its way back into the end zone after completing 10 yards at 7:48 of the second quarter. EKU’s defense responded when Davion Ross interfered with a Sycamore pass and sent it back 18 yards for a Colonel touchdown. The secondary colonel thwarted Indiana State’s final half-time practice as Joseph Sayles caught an assist in the end zone to keep the score tied at 14-14 before halftime.
The Sycamores regained the lead in the third quarter, completing an eight-minute drive with a 32-yard field goal.
The Colonels greet the Governors of Austin Peay at Roy Kidd Stadium on Saturday, September 25. The game will start at 3 p.m.
