The situation is “incredibly frustrating, incredibly sad, incredibly disgusting,” he said.
A person’s status as vaccinated is a requirement for hospital organ transplant patients “in almost all situations,” UCHealth spokesperson Dan Weaver said, without commenting on any particular patient. .
That a person wishing for a transplant must meet a set of prerequisites before surgery is not a new hospital policy and predates COVID-19, Weaver said.
“Patients may also be required to avoid alcohol, quit smoking or prove that they can continue to take their anti-rejection drugs long after their transplant,” he said. “These requirements increase the likelihood that a transplant will be successful and the patient will avoid rejection.”
The woman will be removed from the hospital’s active transplant list if she is still not vaccinated by the end of October, according to a letter shared by Geitner on Twitter.
The details of the letter, including information about the sender, were covered in the mail.
Transplant patients who are not vaccinated risk a higher death rate, between 20% and 30%, Weaver said.
