Colorado's third child dies of flu

DENVER – A third child died of flu in Colorado, according to latest figures from the Colorado Department of Health and Environment (CDHPE).

The last death was reported during the week ending March 16th. The first death was reported in January and the second in February, according to the CDHPE. Two cases were associated with influenza A, H1N1. The other case was associated with influenza A, H3N2.

During the week ending March 23, 137 additional hospitalizations associated with influenza were reported. This brings the total number of hospitalizations since the start of the 2018-2019 season to 3,330, according to the CDHPE website. The highest hospitalization rates are for children from birth to 4 years of age and adults 65 years and older.

The Colorado Flu Report is published every Tuesday every week to provide a concise, up-to-date summary of influenza activity in Colorado.

Influenza is considered widespread in 44 states.

Across the country, the flu has been linked to the deaths of 76 children, according to the latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
