The Livingston County Board of Commissioners has appointed a new person to the Huron Clinton Metroparks Board of Directors.
The board of trustees last night officially selected Brighton’s Floodgate Renewal Church, Brighton’s senior pastor Bill Bolin as the county representation. The post had been occupied by former commissioner Steve Williams who had asked for a new mandate. Chairman of the Board, Wes Nakagiri, objected to some of the “diversity, equity and inclusion” efforts of the Metroparks board. The appointment resulted in a change in the appointment policy, giving the Chairman of the Board of Directors his own candidate. The nominating committee chose Williams, but Nakagiri wanted Bolin.
Bolin was at Monday’s meeting and was ready to speak, but Williams was not, leading to questions as to whether he had been invited and briefed on the opportunity. Nakagiri said, “I assumed those who supported Steve Williams would tell Steve about it. I guess it’s a shame that this didn’t happen. I don’t think that should, in my opinion, penalize Mr. Bolin or deny Mr. Bolin the opportunity to address the board.
Bollin told commissioners he was the right choice. He said: “Once I am appointed to the Metroparks Board, you, the Livingston County Board of Commissioners, will learn that you can trust your Metroparks representative to vote in a way that reflects the values of this. commission and this county. In my opinion, it is important that you, as the Livingston County Council of Commissioners, understand that your choice of someone who shares your values and who has the courage to stand up and cast the right vote is important.
Commissioners Carol Sue Reader and Doug Helzerman questioned the fairness and appropriateness of moving forward if they were unsure whether Williams was invited. Nakagiri asked Helzerman if he wanted to take Williams’ time and speak on his behalf, to which Helzerman replied, “Absolutely not. He is quite capable of speaking for himself.
A suspension was granted to allow Nakagiri to invite Williams, as per Helzerman’s request.
Williams appeared on Zoom and presented his qualifications, then said: “I continue to be puzzled why the little short DCI program takes so long, because if someone spends 2 hours in a class in a 2000 work year hours, it works at a tenth of 1 percent of their time. I would like to focus on that other 99.99 percent. I believe we only have good things that have been accomplished… ”
The commissioners then voted for one or the other candidate, with Bolin obtaining a majority of 5 votes. His support came from Nakagiri, Jay Gross, Brenda Plank, Jay Drick and Martin Smith. Williams received votes from Helzerman, Reader, Carol Griffith and Mitchell Zajac.
