Four companies have agreed to pay a $ 77.6 million settlement to clean up and investigate contaminated groundwater at two Superfund sites in Los Angeles County.
Montrose Chemical Corp. of California, Bayer CropScience Inc., TFCF America Inc. and Stauffer Management Co. LLC will pay to tackle contamination at legacy pesticide and rubber manufacturing sites – the Montrose Chemical Corp. sites. Superfund and Del Amo Superfund.
The companies have also agreed to pay an additional $ 8 million to federal and state agencies, ending a three-decade legal battle, the Justice Department said today.
Together, the three settlement agreements would help improve groundwater quality in Los Angeles County and help investigate possible contamination of a storm waterway, the Department of Justice Assistant Attorney General said, Todd Kim, in a statement.
“These regulations demonstrate the continued efforts of the Department of Justice and the EPA, working with our state partners, to ensure that polluters, not the American public, pay for the investigation and cleanup of Superfund sites.” Kim said.
Under the agreements, companies will pump and treat groundwater before re-injecting it into the soil, as well as treating the soil that is the source of the contamination. The companies will study a historic stormwater path that leads to the Montrose Superfund site to determine if further cleanup in that area is needed, according to the DOJ.
Residents near the sites have been affected by the contamination for years, said Meredith Williams, director of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control.
“We stand alongside the people who live, work and play near this contamination, and we will continue our efforts to make polluters pay for their actions,” she said in a statement.
