NEW LONDON, Connecticut – Tony Hsieh, retired CEO of online shoe retailer Zappos, died of complications from smoke inhalation in a house fire earlier this month in Connecticut, the state medical examiner’s office announced on Monday.
The death of Hsieh, 46, on Friday was deemed accidental. He had been hospitalized following the November 18 fire in New London, Connecticut.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation. The New London Police Department said rescuers arrived at the scene to find black smoke coming out of the back of the house and Hsieh was in a storage area and could not get out.
Hsieh had led the Las Vegas Zappos for 20 years before retiring. The Harvard University graduate remained with the online retailer even after it was sold in 2009 to Amazon for $ 1.2 billion.
