The number of journalists employed in Nevada has declined dramatically over the past two decades. Widespread downsizing and in some cases the loss of local news organizations in Nevada have reduced access to information that previously helped maintain healthy community ties.
To draw attention to this crisis in local news, theReynolds School of Journalismat the University of Nevada, Reno invites the audience to “Local News Matters,” the Cole Campbell Dialogues in Democracy 2021 on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. in the Nevada Museum of Art theater. The event will be both in person (limited places) and available virtually. Interested persons canbook tickets on Eventbrite’s local news website.The program will take place on the first official “Local Journalism Day” in Nevada, proclaimed by Governor Sisolak this year.
During the event, Larry Ryckman, editor-in-chief of independent digital news organization The Colorado Sun and former editor and reporter for the Denver Post and the AP, will provide insight into the crisis in the news. across the country, as well as how some states are trying to support and expand various sources of local information.
Ryckman, a Reynolds School alumnus, will then host a panel of local Nevada journalists, including KTVN News anchor and reporter Arianna Bennett, news director at KUNR Public Radio, Michelle Billman, editor and editor. of This is Reno, Bob Conrad, Reno Gazette Journal editor Brian Duggan, and Nevada Independent reporter Jazmin Orozco Rodriguez. Audience members will be invited to ask questions about ways to improve the sustainability of local news.
Following the official program, audience members will meet with local journalistic organizations at a reception at the show.
The late Cole Campbell became Dean of The Reynolds School in 2004, after serving as Editor-in-Chief of The Virginian-Pilot and later of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. After his death, an endowment to support ongoing discussions of journalism was established under the name of Cole Campbell Dialogues on Journalism and Democracy, facilitated by the Reynolds School.
