IIt is very cold and, if I may say, winter in Los Angeles in February, and we are about to fall on a rare layer of snow on Thursday, according to a report early in the morning by the national meteorological service.

Two passes in southern California could even be blocked on Thursday by a cold snowstorm bringing snow at an altitude of up to 1,500 feet, including 1 to 4 inches in areas where the whiteness is rarely visible, such as the high valleys of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, the hills and mountains of Santa Monica.

Four to six inches of snow is expected in the eastern part of the San Gabriel Mountains, the report says.

Snow fell on the Grapevine and Palmdale last night and early Thursday morning, creating icy road conditions on the 5 Freeway in Lebec. Traffic, although slow, was not interrupted due to the icy weather on the main artery from southern California to the central valley.

The sky opened Thursday afternoon in a flurry of soft, icy granules across LA County Residents posted photos and video clips of Malibu to Pasadena, including footage showing snow on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, Eagle Rock, Highland Park and Boyle Heights.

It's been the first snow for Southland for more than 50 years – since 1962, for those who matter – according to meteorologist Wes Holenstein, chief meteorologist for WNCN in Raleigh, North Carolina.

"Are you planning to cross I-5 between Bakersfield and Los Angeles County? Get ready for the snow and a possible I-5 closure by the Grapevine, "tweeted Caltrans Thursday for Angelenos, unaccustomed to icy and icy roads.

Traffic was steady in the Cajon Pass early Thursday, with rare snowflakes. California police officers helped prevent potential ice accidents by deliberately slowing cars with occasional traffic disruptions.
