The Democratic Republic of the Congo on Sunday registered a record list of 27 new confirmed Ebola cases, bringing to 126 the number of cases recorded last week, the largest since the outbreak's outbreak in August last, announced the Ministry of Health.

The previous record was 110 confirmed cases two weeks ago.

The epidemic in the eastern parts of the country is currently spreading at its fastest pace, largely because of a series of attacks by militiamen and suspects in the international response.

In the last two months, five Ebola centers have been attacked and a senior official of the World Health Organization was killed by militiamen 10 days ago.

The attackers have mostly not been identified, but it is thought that they include both local militia and community members who oppose the response efforts. Many believe that the Ebola virus is a conspiracy developed by the government or foreign countries.

The current virus outbreak, which causes severe vomiting, diarrhea and bleeding, is the second most important in the history of the West Africa epidemic. 2013-2016 that claimed the lives of more than 11,000 people.

The Ebola outbreak in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri in eastern Congo has reportedly killed at least 891 people and infected more than 500 more so far.
