Connecticut Department of Public Health Issues Health Alert:
New Haven County now upgraded to “High transmission” Category
HARTFORD, Connecticut. – The Centers for Disease Control has now placed New Haven County in the “High Transmission” category of COVID-19. New Haven is the first county in the state to be upgraded to the high transmission category. The other seven counties in Connecticut are still classified by the CDC as “significant transmission.”
The high transmission category – which is the most serious as defined by the CDC – is 100 or more cases per 100,000 people or a positivity rate of 10% or more in the past seven days.
The substantial transmission category is 50 to 100 cases per 100,000 or a positivity rate between 8 and 10 percent in the past seven days.
With the rapid and continuing increase in COVID-19 cases in the state over the past 14 days due to the spread of the Delta variant, the Connecticut Department of Public Health strongly recommends ALL CONNECTICUT residents to over two years, whether vaccinated or not, return to wearing masks in indoor public spaces.
Vaccinated and unvaccinated people at high risk of complications from COVID-19, including those with weakened immune systems, diabetes, asthma, other lung diseases, pregnancy or obesity, should also avoid large indoor gatherings that may include a mix of vaccinated and unvaccinated people.
Vaccination remains the most important defense against illness and hospitalization due to COVID-19. So-called “vaccine breakthroughs” have occurred in Connecticut, but they remain rare, and the vast majority of hospitalizations and deaths in Connecticut and the country are unvaccinated people. DPH strongly recommends that unvaccinated people be vaccinated as soon as possible to help stop the ongoing spread of the Delta variant.
