Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid has been suspended for two games for an illegal check on defenseman Nick Leddy, the NHL said Friday.
This is McDavid's first career suspension; he will lose $ 134,408.60 in salary.
The incident occurred late in the first period of Thursday's game against the Islanders. Leddy, who was trying to puncture the puck in the Oilers' area, received a cut to the head through McDavid's shoulder after releasing the puck, "making Leddy's head the main point of contact on a shot where such contact of the head was preventable, "according to a video released by the NHL's Department of Player Safety.
After the match, Islanders coach Barry Trotz said Leddy had passed the concussion protocol.
McDavid would score the overtime winner in a 4-3 win.
McDavid, 21, has only 88 penalty minutes in 267 career games.
"Obviously, this is not a good control," McDavid told reporters after the match. "It was not what I was trying to do, I was not trying to finish my control over him and he stopped a little earlier than I thought, and I hit it too high. "
McDavid, who leads the Oilers with 32 goals and 53 assists, will be eligible to return Wednesday when Edmonton travels to Toronto.
