A conservative watchdog has called on the Congressional Ethics Office to “immediately open an investigation” into Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., NY) presence at the Met Gala on Monday night.
Ocasio-Cortez wore a white dress that said “tax the rich” to the opulent New York event where tickets cost at least $ 30,000 each.
The progressive member of “Squad” defended his presence at the event in a Tweeter saying that “elected New Yorkers are regularly invited to and attend the Met because of our responsibilities in overseeing and supporting the city’s cultural institutions for the public.” I was one of the many present at this evening.
However, she did not say if she received a free ticket to the event.
The American Accountability Foundation (AAF) has filed an ethics complaint calling for an investigation into whether Ocasio-Cortez accepted an “ineligible gift” to attend the gala or violated campaign finance laws, according to Fox News.
“Without a prompt investigation and enforcement of the rules of Congress, the American people risk losing confidence in the ability of Congress to control its members,” the complaint states.
He argues that since the congresswoman declared her presence at the Met Gala part of her official duties, the “receiving the gift” must fall. under exemptions for high-traffic events or charitable events described in House rules.
The group maintains that Ocasio-Cortez’s invitation was not covered by either of the two exemptions, as the gala was not widely followed and the invitations are overseen by Conde Nast, a for-profit company.
The MP and other attendees also received separate criticisms for being maskless at the gala while event staff wore masks. Guests at the event were to be vaccinated, but under New York City’s mandate to vaccinate workers – which includes museum employees – staff did too. It is not known why, then, staff were required to wear masks when participants were not.
