Containers found; Illinois man says he buried his mother and sister

LYONS, Ill. (AP) – Police found two containers in a Chicago suburban backyard on Saturday, days after a man told investigators the bodies of his mother and sister were buried there years ago, an official said.

“They found a container and they think a corpse is inside, and they dig up the second container,” said Ray Hanania, spokesperson for the village of Lyon. “Almost finished.”

The next step would be to identify the remains, he said.

The investigation began after police were called to conduct a welfare check Thursday at the Lyon home, 12 miles southwest of Chicago. Officers found the house full of debris and excrement and no running water. Two brothers lived there.

The police chief said a brother revealed their mother, who was 70, died in 2015 after their sister pushed her down the stairs. The man said the sister died in 2019 from an illness.

Chief Thomas Herion quoted a brother as saying the bodies were buried in the yard for financial reasons. The state has no record of the deaths of women. Herion said if any remains were found, investigators would try to determine whether the deaths were due to natural causes or a criminal act. It is a crime in Illinois to cover up a death.

The brothers were staying in a hotel while the police were working on the property.

“They don’t seem to like it, but at least it’s a safe place for them and we have social services for them,” Hanania said.
