A teenage girl with no underlying health problem died from the coronavirus just days after complaining of headaches.
Sarah Simental died on Sunday, less than a week after being diagnosed with the killer virus, and only turning 18 earlier this month.
The high school student, of Tinley Park, near Chicago, in the United States, was otherwise healthy but the virus “devoured her”, causing a brain hemorrhage and kidney damage, according to her parents Deborah and Donald.
A few days before Christmas, Sarah started to suffer from mild cold symptoms, but things quickly got worse and her mother took her for a test on December 19, which came back positive.
Over the next three days, the Lincoln-Way East High School student continued to worsen, with vomiting, chills and body aches, before being taken to Silver Cross Hospital on December 23.
She was then airlifted to the University of Chicago Medical Center where she died on Boxing Day, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Deborah told WLS-TV: “She went into cardiac arrest, she had a brain hemorrhage, it damaged her kidneys, it devoured her. No parent should ever have to watch their child go through this. No one.
“I know she had a fight because one of the last times I was able to talk to her on the phone, they took her from the regular room to the intensive care unit and she said, ‘ I’m fine, Mom, “and that was the last thing,” Deborah added.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has since ruled that she died of acute hypoxic respiratory failure due to coronavirus infection, with non-traumatic brain hemorrhages as a contributing factor.
Sarah’s brother Matthew, 20, contracted the virus in August but recovered quickly.
Deborah and Donald said their daughter spent much of the pandemic at home with the family’s dog, Bailey, and they weren’t sure how she caught Covid.
“Sarah is an example that this can happen to younger, healthier people,” Deborah said.
Donald added: “Please take this coronavirus seriously.”
