The new coronavirus has struck each of California’s 58 counties, but as the first outbreaks have proven, the spread of the virus can vary widely from county to county. This graph shows the new case rate for each county since the end of March.
It might look like a rainbow spaghetti jumble, a pandemic-inspired culinary mishap, but the interactive board lets you select any county and compare county groups from the drop-down menu to display.
You can also click the colored label for any county to highlight that county’s case rate curve in the graph. You can also see the rate of new cases at any time by clicking on this point in the graph.
The case rate is calculated using data collected daily by the Bay Area News Group from county public health department websites. For each county, we calculate the number of people who tested positive in the previous 14 days per 10,000 population.
If you are curious about the trends for the first big wave of cases this summer or if you are more curious about recent trends, you can adjust the time period shown on the chart using the date slider at the top.
