Coronavirus infections continued to rise in Los Angeles County on Sunday to levels seen in the summer surge, and public health officials have warned that the street celebrations that greeted election news over the weekend could easily increase the spread.
Officials announced more than 2,200 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, marking the fourth day in a row with more than 2,000 confirmed infections. Authorities have also confirmed two more deaths from the disease, a number likely reduced by notification delays over the weekend.
There were 23 deaths reported on Friday and 15 on Saturday; Sunday’s figures bring the total to 7,172 deaths from COVID-19 so far, according to a press release from the county public health department. In LA County, a total of 322,207 cases of COVID-19 have been recorded.
There are 851 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in the county; 29% of them are in intensive care, officials said. Statewide, cases continue to climb, but top health officials say California is not experiencing the kind of sharp increase that has occurred this summer.
County health officials on Saturday warned that crowds and street celebrations following the presidential election results “are places where it’s very easy and very likely for COVID-19 to spread.
“Let’s not forget that no matter how we feel, we all have an obligation to protect each other from COVID-19,” said Barbara Ferrer, director of the LA County Department of Public Health. “Bringing people together outside your household, especially in settings where people shout, sing or sing without distancing themselves, can easily lead to an increase in COVID-19 cases.”
