Coronavirus in Oregon: 2,099 new cases, 22 deaths, cases and hospitalizations expected to drop

Oregon reported 2,099 new known cases of COVID-19 and 22 deaths on Friday.

The number of cases had been declining since about the first week of September. But for over a week now, they have leveled off. The number of people hospitalized, however, continued its downward trend on Friday to 1,002 – down 25 patients from the previous day and nearly 18% since September 1.

Two new forecasts predict a decrease in cases and hospitalizations in the coming weeks.

The state released its latest forecast on Friday, which projects daily new cases could drop to between 830 and 1,060 during the last week of September and October 1. But that could largely depend on the impact of more than 600,000 K-12 schoolchildren returning to class and major late-summer events that could boost transmission, it is predicted.

An Oregon Health & Science University forecast released Thursday does not predict the number of new daily cases, but estimates that around 800 Oregonians will be hospitalized in early October due to COVID-19. It’s still a few hundred more than the state’s second largest pandemic wave in December.

The OHSU forecast also predicts that hospitals in the state will still be under intense pressure for the weeks to come.
