The Oregon Health Authority on Thursday reported 1,151 new confirmed or suspected cases and 21 more deaths as the state’s death toll rapidly climbs to 1,000.
In just three days of December, 63 new deaths were reported, more than the total number of deaths reported in March, May or June.
Hospitalizations also increased by 10 after a drop on Wednesday, with 559 people in the hospital. Four other people were in intensive care units statewide.
Hospitalizations and new cases appear to have briefly leveled off this week, but that is in part due to reporting issues in the state.
The daily reported cases have not exceeded 1,314 for four consecutive days, and Thursday’s total was significantly lower than the Thanksgiving Day count.
It’s unclear, however, whether the decline is due to fewer infections, fewer people seeking testing over the Thanksgiving holiday, or other factors. The state has radically changed the way it tracks testing, making historical comparisons difficult.
The technological challenges of the Oregon Health Authority are also complicating factors. In response to questions from The Oregonian / OregonLive, officials acknowledged that more than 200 cases that should have been announced on Wednesday were not included in the daily press release but were added to the state cumulative total and county level online dashboards.
Tim Heider, a state spokesperson, said in an email that a “treatment issue” kept those cases from being reported by the agency, meaning the actual number of cases on Wednesday was around 1,500. He said undercoverage in press release no ‘would have no impact on the state’s moving average, as this is calculated from the cumulative tally – which has always been correct.
If the state’s cases and hospitalizations in fact stabilize, it could indicate that the spread is slowing following new statewide restrictions initially rolled out by Governor Kate Brown last month.
New deaths: The 953rd death is in a 70-year-old Washington County woman with underlying medical conditions. She tested positive on November 14 and died on November 26 at Tuality Community Hospital.
The 954th death is a 76-year-old man from Multnomah County. He tested positive on November 16 and died on November 21 at Providence Portland Medical Center. Officials were working to confirm if he had any underlying medical conditions.
The 955th death is a 56-year-old man from Lane County. He tested positive on November 20 and died on November 22 at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center Riverbend. Officials were working to confirm if he had any underlying medical conditions.
The 956th death is a 98-year-old woman from Lane County with underlying medical conditions. She tested positive on November 18 and died on November 24 at her home.
The 957th death is in a 51-year-old man from Marion County with underlying health conditions. He tested positive on November 10 and died on November 23 at Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center.
The 958th death is an 85-year-old woman from Lane County. She tested positive on November 10 and died on November 25 at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center Riverbend. Officials were working to confirm if she had any underlying medical conditions.
The 959th death is a 97-year-old woman from Clackamas County with underlying health issues. She tested positive on November 25 and died on December 1 at her home.
The 960th death is a 97-year-old man from Clackamas County. He tested positive on November 24 and died on November 27 at Providence Portland Medical Center. Officials were working to confirm if he had any underlying medical conditions.
The 961st death is a 95-year-old woman from Linn County with underlying medical conditions. She tested positive on November 20 and died on November 25 at Albany General Hospital.
The 962nd death is a 70-year-old man from Multnomah County. He tested positive on November 18 and died on December 2. Officials were working to confirm where he died and if he had any underlying medical conditions.
The 963rd death is a 74-year-old man from Marion County with underlying health conditions. He tested positive on November 13 and died on December 1 in Salem Hospital.
The 964th death is a 78-year-old man from Marion County. He tested positive on November 24 and died on November 30. Officials were working to confirm if he had any underlying medical conditions.
The 965th death is a 72-year-old man from Marion County with underlying health conditions. He tested positive on November 28 and died on December 1 in Salem Hospital.
The 966th death is an 83-year-old man from Jackson County. He tested positive on November 25 and died on December 1 at Rogue Valley Medical Center. Officials were working to confirm if he had any underlying medical conditions.
The 967th death is in an 81-year-old man from Marion County with underlying health conditions. He tested positive on November 27 and died on December 2 in Salem Hospital.
The 968th death is a 93-year-old woman from Multnomah County. She tested positive on November 9 and died on November 17 at her home. Officials were working to confirm if she had any underlying medical conditions.
The 969th death is an 83-year-old woman from Multnomah County. She tested positive on November 28 and died on December 2 at Providence Portland Medical Center. Officials were working to confirm if she had any underlying medical conditions.
The 970th death is an 81-year-old man from Marion County. He tested positive on November 6 and died on November 30 at Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center. Officials were working to confirm if he had any underlying medical conditions.
The 971st death is an 81-year-old man from Multnomah County. He tested positive on November 20 and died on November 22 at Providence Portland Medical Center. Officials were working to confirm if he had any underlying medical conditions.
The 972nd death is a 74-year-old man from Multnomah County with underlying health issues. He tested positive on October 24 and died on December 1 at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.
The 973rd death is in a 92-year-old Union County man with underlying medical conditions. He tested positive on November 17 and died on November 25 at the Grande Ronde hospital.
The Oregon Corrections Department also reported that an inmate aged 80 to 90 from the Oregon State Correctional Facility died on Nov. 30 and tested positive for COVID-19. His death is not yet reflected in the state tally.
The state also reported that a previous death had been counted twice and the number of deaths had been adjusted to reflect the correction.
The prevalence of infections: On Thursday, the state reported 1,799 new positive tests out of 21,382 tests performed, for a positivity rate of 8.4%.
Who was infected: New confirmed and suspected infections increased in the following age groups: 0-9 years (43); 10-19 (105); 20-29 (223); 30-39 (226); 40-49 (193); 50-59 (155); 60-69 (82); 70 to 79 (65); 80 years and over (42).
Who is in the hospital: The state reported that 559 Oregonians with confirmed coronavirus infections were currently in hospital on Wednesday, 10 more than Wednesday. Of those, 109 coronavirus patients were in intensive care units, an increase of four from Wednesday.
Since he started: Oregon has reported 79,293 confirmed or suspected infections and 973 deaths, among the lowest totals in the country. To date, 2,043,324 tests have been completed in Oregon.
