The Oregon Health Authority on Thursday reported 1,339 new confirmed or suspected coronavirus cases and 21 additional deaths as Governor Kate Brown announced she was extending the state of emergency until at least March.
Brown acknowledged that Oregon was quickly approaching another dismal milestone, even with the good news that vaccinations began in the state on Wednesday.
“As we approach 100,000 cases of COVID-19 in Oregon, and hospitals and healthcare workers have reached their limits, there is no doubt that COVID-19 continues to pose a threat to the community. public health, ”she said in a statement. “These are the darkest days of this pandemic. And yet, hope has arrived. Starting this week, each time another Oregonian is vaccinated against COVID-19, we are one step closer to the day we can return to normal life. The state of emergency gives the governor the power to issue orders to protect public safety and requires renewal every 60 days. Its decision to renew it was expected, as it plans to keep counties below a four-tier risk rating guiding local restrictions on gatherings and businesses.

New deaths: The 1,263rd death is a 92-year-old Jackson County woman with underlying medical conditions. She tested positive on November 10 and died on December 14 at her home.
The 1,264th death is an 80-year-old man from Josephine County. He tested positive on December 8 and died on December 16 at his residence. Officials were working to confirm if he had any underlying medical conditions.
The 1,265th death is a 78-year-old man from Klamath County with underlying medical conditions. He tested positive on December 5 and died on December 12 at his home.
The 1,266th death is an 83-year-old woman from Lane County. She tested positive on November 27 and died on November 30 at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center. Officials were working to confirm if she had any underlying medical conditions.
The 1,267th death is an 87-year-old woman from Malheur County. She tested positive on December 7 and died on December 15 at St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise. Officials were working to confirm if she had any underlying medical conditions.
The 1,268th death is in a 94-year-old Marion County woman with no underlying medical conditions. She tested positive on November 30 and died on December 10 at her home.
The 1,269th death is an 89-year-old woman from Marion County with underlying medical conditions. She tested positive on November 22 and died on December 16 in Salem Hospital.
The 1,270th death is in an 83-year-old man from Multnomah County with underlying health conditions. He tested positive on October 5 and died on November 29 at his home.
The 1,271st death is a 78-year-old woman from Multnomah County with underlying medical conditions. She tested positive on November 27 and died on December 3 at Providence Portland Medical Center.
The 1,272nd death is an 80-year-old man from Multnomah County. He tested positive on November 23 and died the same day at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. Officials were working to confirm if he had any underlying medical conditions.

The 1,282nd death is in a 75-year-old Washington County woman with underlying medical conditions. She tested positive on November 30 and died on December 12 at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.
The 1,283rd death is an 81-year-old woman from Yamhill County with underlying medical conditions. She tested positive on December 4 and died on December 8 at her home.
The prevalence of infections: On Thursday, the state reported 1,715 new positive tests out of 24,404 tests performed, a 7% positivity rate.
Who was infected: New confirmed or suspected infections increased in the following age groups: 0-9 years (45); 10-19 (123); 20-29 (260); 30-39 (226); 40-49 (225); 50-59 (199); 60-69 (110); 70 to 79 (70); 80 years and over (58).
Who is in the hospital: The state reported that 551 Oregonians with confirmed coronavirus infections were currently in hospital on Thursday, three fewer than Wednesday. Of those, 113 coronavirus patients were in intensive care units, the same number as on Wednesday.
Since he started: Oregon has reported 98,936 confirmed or suspected infections and 1,283 deaths, among the lowest totals in the country. To date, the state has reported 2,392,813 lab reports from testing.
