The Oregon Health Authority on Saturday announced 365 new cases of COVID-19 as well as three new deaths, bringing the number of coronavirus deaths in the state to 2,322.
The numbers come as Governor Kate Brown chose not to speed up Oregon’s current vaccination schedule in response to President Joe Biden’s directive asking states to make all adults eligible for the vaccine by May 1 .
Brown is sticking to the plan to begin vaccinating the general population of Oregonians 16 and older by July 1 – two months later than what Biden says now is possible nationwide. But Brown said she wanted to see Oregon’s weekly federal vaccine shipments increase before making any new promises to residents.
The next group in Oregon to qualify for the vaccine are people aged 45 and over who have underlying “increased risk” conditions, such as pregnancy, type 2 diabetes and cancer.
Meanwhile, Oregon reported fewer cases of the coronavirus last week than at any time since September. But unfortunately, cases do not continue on their downward trajectory.
Cases are on the rise again – something state officials have recognized as possible with relaxed trade restrictions and more contagious variants of the circulating virus. The state appears on track to surpass last week’s low when the current week’s numbers are released.

Who is dead: The 2,320th death from COVID-19 in Oregon is an 89-year-old man from Clackamas County who tested positive on March 11 and died on March 12 at Providence Portland Medical Center. He had underlying conditions.
The 2,321st death is a 68-year-old man from Lane County who tested positive on January 24 and died on March 10 at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart. He had underlying conditions.
The 2,322nd death is a 95-year-old man from Multnomah County who became symptomatic after coming into contact with a confirmed case and died on March 1 at his home. The date of onset of symptoms and the presence of underlying conditions are being confirmed.
The prevalence of infections: On Saturday, the state reported 515 new positive tests out of 14,454 tests performed, a positivity rate of 3.6%.
Who is in the hospital: The state reported that 104 Oregonians with confirmed coronavirus infections were hospitalized on Saturday, 19 fewer than on Friday. Of these, 23 coronavirus patients were in intensive care units – a figure that has not changed since Friday.
Vaccines administered: Oregon administered 1,301,968 first and second doses of the 1,575,705 vaccine received, which represents about 82.6% of the state’s supply. Oregon reported 32,429 newly administered doses, including 18,556 on Friday and the remainder of the preceding days.
Since he started: Oregon has reported 159,392 confirmed or suspected infections and 2,322 deaths, among the lowest per capita figures in the country. To date, the state has reported more than 3,953,338 lab reports from testing.
