The United States added fewer newly reported Covid-19 cases on Sunday than in previous days, following the Thanksgiving holiday which was the busiest travel time in the United States since the start of the pandemic.
The number of coronavirus-related hospitalizations across the country hit a record high again, according to the Covid Tracking Project, with more than 93,000 admitted on Sunday.
The country reported 138,903 new cases on Sunday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. That’s down from 155,596 the day before and the record 205,557 reported on Friday. Sunday’s figure was also a week-over-week drop, down from 142,734 on November 22.
Ahead of Thanksgiving, the Covid Tracking Project noted that the holiday season would likely affect the data, with numbers potentially dropping and then rising, as testing and reporting dwindle and then catch up in the following days.
Officials on Sunday warned the situation would worsen over the next few weeks, with what Dr Anthony Fauci, the Trump administration’s top infectious disease expert, called a “surge on a wave” of new cases.
The weekend after Thanksgiving met expectations that this would be the busiest travel time in the United States since the pandemic began, thanks to mild weather and falling gasoline prices that have encouraged some to drive rather than fly.
Nearly 50 million people are expected to have taken a trip over the Thanksgiving holiday, AAA said, despite tightening local crackdowns and warnings from federal health officials. On November 19, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised people not to travel during Thanksgiving.
The infections recently reported on Sunday bring the nation’s total to nearly 13.4 million, with 266,875 dead, according to data from Johns Hopkins.
Globally, more than 62.74 million have been infected and nearly 1.46 million have died, according to data from Johns Hopkins.
