Coronavirus Live Updates: US Cases Hit Another Record

The United States set another single-day high for coronavirus cases, with the total number of new infections surpassing 136,000, while hospitalizations from Covid-19 were at their highest level since the start of the pandemic.

The total number of confirmed cases in the country has exceeded 10.2 million, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, as the virus spread widely across the country.

Texas became the first state in the country to exceed one million cases, according to Johns Hopkins. California now has the second highest number of cases in the United States, with more than 990,000 cases.

The daily workload for Tuesday reached record levels in Illinois, Ohio, Colorado, Montana and Wyoming, according to Johns Hopkins. And the number of new cases in Guam also continued to rise rapidly, with the U.S. territory reporting 180 new cases on Tuesday, bringing its total to 5,659.

Hospitalizations, up about 30% since the start of the month, reached 61,964 on Tuesday, surpassing the previous record of 59,940 reached on April 15, according to the Covid Tracking Project. A summer surge also saw hospital admissions reach just under 60,000 in July.

Intensive care units are also facing an increase in patient numbers due to the pandemic, with 11,952 people in intensive care in the United States as of Tuesday, the highest number since May 7.

The death toll in the United States topped 239,000 as 1,420 new deaths were reported on Tuesday, the highest daily figure since August 12. Reports of deaths vary by state, and deaths recorded on a certain day may have occurred on a different date.
