Tuesday’s figures bring the state’s total to 238,657.
The department reported 62 new deaths. The total number of deaths in Pennsylvania attributed to COVID-19 stands at 9,086.
Across Bucks County, infections reached unprecedented levels last week and authorities sounded the alarm on Tuesday as more cases were reported in any other week of the eight-month pandemic.
“It’s off again, but maybe it is a little more difficult this time,” said Commissioner Diane Ellis-Marseglia
As of last week, the Bucks County Health Department recorded about 118 cases per day. This is an increase of 79% from the previous week and 3.5 times higher than a month ago.
Officials say the expected spike in COVID cases is only exacerbated by Halloween parties, sporting events and weddings.
“We think the problem isn’t so much with businesses as it is with people who are tired of wearing the masks and going out to Halloween parties and other parties and things of that nature,” said Commissioner Robert Harvie. “We just need people to somehow tie themselves in and get through the next couple of months.”
Officials said they feared the community-spread virus could spread into long-term care facilities.
“Cases are increasing, but deaths are not increasing and hospitalizations are not increasing, so the message continues to be please wear a mask all the time and please continue social distancing,” said Commissioner Gene DiGirolamo.
At Tuesday morning’s press conference, officials announced a large distribution of PPE. Thousands of N-95 masks, gloves and face shields have been ordered to protect emergency responders and healthcare workers.
