Countdown to the Presidential Inauguration with an Advent Calendar

Every four to eight years (usually eight, but not everyone wins), our nation celebrates one of its most exciting traditions – the inauguration of a new president. It is never less than an exhilarating and intoxicating moment – the ceremony! The pump and the circumstances! The playful posture on the waist of the crowd! The mere idea sets me off on a hunt through Prospect Park for a bald eagle to greet.

For some inexplicable reason – pandemic fatigue? – I look forward to the inauguration of January 20, 2021 more than any before it, or at least none since 2008, when a dream team of an inaugural committee made a good show (opening the full length of the National Mall for the first time already). That’s why, this time around, I’m counting down to the big day with an Advent calendar.

I know what you are thinking – Advent calendars are about marking the start of the liturgical year and ticking off the 25 days that bring us to Christmas, with daily sweets. But if it’s an annual tradition for you, it’s probably because you have kids, and the only reason kids worry about Advent calendars because mini lego set One day brings them closer to the unbridled avarice of December 25.

Think about how that makes them horny, then remember that there is as well 25 days between December 26 and January 20, and that you can probably purchase an additional Advent Calendar for 50% off at Walgreens on Boxing Day.

If you don’t want to spend the money, I guess you can make your own, stuffed with custom goodies – maybe you can print your own Congress Joint Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies collectible cards, one for each day?– but I prefer good old chocolate. It’s the 2021 presidential inauguration! If celebrating that isn’t worth a few extra calories, I don’t know what it is.
