The number of COVID-19 cases in San Diego has increased dramatically over the past week, prompting county health officials to urge residents to continue getting vaccinated.
In the past seven days, 3,465 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in San Diego County. This is 1,566 or 82% more cases than the previous seven-day period.
Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are also on the rise. The daily total rose above 100 on July 6 and has remained above that threshold since. Hospitalizations are likely to be even higher as they lag behind the increase in the number of cases.
The increase in cases and hospitalizations is mainly occurring among those San Diego who are not vaccinated. These people are also disproportionately affected by the worrisome Alpha, Gamma and Delta COVID-19 variants.
“The best protection we have against COVID-19 is to get vaccinated,” said Wilma Wooten, MD, MPH, county public health official. “Vaccines are extremely effective in preventing serious illnesses caused by COVID-19. If you haven’t been vaccinated, do so now. “
There has also been a very slight increase in post-vaccination infections, which means people have been infected with COVID-19 even though they were fully vaccinated.
Wooten said it was expected and breakthrough cases usually have mild symptoms.
“It doesn’t mean the vaccine doesn’t work. Quite the contrary, the vaccine does what it is supposed to do: prevent most people from being hospitalized, or worse, from dying, ”Wooten said.

- A new death was reported between July 14 and July 20. The region’s total is 3,787.
- A man in his 60s with underlying health issues died on June 12.
Cases, case rate and tests:
- 521 cases of COVID-19 were reported to the county on July 21. The region’s total is now 288,681.
- San Diego County’s case rate was 7.6 cases per 100,000 population as of July 20.
- 7,895 tests were reported to the county on July 20 and the percentage of new positive cases was 6.6%.
- The 14-day rolling percentage of positive cases among tests is 5.1%.
Community outbreaks:
- 22 new community outbreaks have been confirmed in the past seven days (July 14 to July 20): 10 in restaurants / bars, four in businesses, two in day camps, one in a campground, one in a restaurant, one in a construction setting, one in a government setting, one in a retail setting and one in a denominational setting.
- The trigger for community epidemics is greater than seven in a 7-day period.
