The Sumter County Health Department received nearly 20,000 additional doses of COVID-19 last week and is distributing many to other local health providers to ramp up the vaccination effort.
The Department of Health shares many of these doses with UF-Health The Villages Hospital, Florida Cancer Specialists, and Langley Health Services.
“Other community partners are keen to support mass immunization efforts,” said Dr Sanford Zelnick, director of the Sumter County Department of Health.
The county also continues to provide vaccine doses to Global Medical Response, which vaccinated 1,000 people a day for the five days a week they were on duty at Lake-Sumter State College in Sumterville.
Global Medical Response will move March 8 to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Wildwood, which is closer to population centers in villages and Wildwood, Zelnick said.
Over the past week, the Sumter County Health Department vaccinated 1,243 people at the Wildwood Community Center.
The good news is that the local spread of the coronavirus appears to be easing.
Hospital admissions for COVID-19 infection have gone from 60 to 70 patients hospitalized at the height of the pandemic to a daily count of hospitalizations of about half that number, Zelnick said.
The Sumter County Department of Health will use the EventBrite registration for the next two weeks of immunization appointments. A total of 1,800 first-dose vaccination opportunities will be offered at various vaccination dates and times over the next two weeks.
“By offering more vaccinations over more days, we hope there will be more time for people to register than with previous registrations to EventBrite in early January,” Zelnick said.

If you have registered for immunization through the state’s pre-registration system (either by calling 866-201-7196 or online at https://myvaccine.fl.gov/), you will be contacted to reconfirm your interest in vaccination. If you re-confirm that you are still interested, the Sumter County Health Department will continue to book appointments from this pre-registration list.
Residents of Sumter County are reminded to plan to receive their second dose from the same provider who provided them with their first dose, as your second dose is scheduled this way.
