LOS ANGELES (AP) – The evacuation of the United States from Afghanistan and the dreaded Hurricane Ida drew viewers to cable channels focused on the ongoing events.

Fox News Channel grabbed the lion’s share of the most-watched cable shows last week, 19 of the top 20, Nielsen figures showed on Tuesday. MSNBC had a less dramatic increase in audiences than the previous week.

Last week’s coverage of the deportation of endangered U.S. citizens and Afghans included a devastating suicide bombing at the airport that killed 13 U.S. servicemen and more than 160 Afghans. The evacuation ended on Monday.

The Weather Channel’s viewership increased as Ida made its way to the Gulf Coast. The channel’s audience among young adults increased 38% last week compared to the same period in 2020.

As Ida made landfall in Louisiana last Sunday, The Weather Channel was the most-watched cable channel by viewers aged 25 to 54.

The destructive hurricane claimed lives and left more than a million homes and businesses in Louisiana and Mississippi without power.

Fox News improved its performance over the previous week by surpassing all broadcast and cable releases. But NBC, thanks to its top-rated “America’s Got Talent” football shows, was the most-watched network.

NBC averaged 3.41 million viewers last week. CBS had 2.71 million, ABC 2.64 million, Fox 1.41 million, Ion Television 1.13 million, Univision 1.38 million, and Telemundo 980,000.
