Senior U.S. coronavirus adviser Dr Anthony Fauci said on Wednesday (local time) that Covid-19 cases could double as a variant worse than Delta could come.
“If the current wave of COVID-19 in the United States continues unabated into the fall and winter, the country is likely to face an even more deadly strain of the virus that could escape current coronavirus vaccines,” Fauci told McClatchy, Axios reported.
His comments underscore the importance of acting quickly to vaccinate the tens of millions of Americans who have not been vaccinated against the virus.
The current surge in coronavirus cases nationwide is due to the Delta variant, which is already more contagious than the original strain of the virus.
Recent data shows that vaccinated people who are still infected with the delta variant also have a high viral load and can pass it on to others, even when they have no symptoms or are suffering from a mild illness. “We are now dealing with a really different virus,” Fauci said.
As the virus continues to spread due to insufficient vaccination rates, it has “a lot” of time to mutate into a new, more dangerous variant in the fall and winter, Fauci said.
“[Q]Quite frankly, we are very fortunate that the vaccines we have now work very well against variants – especially serious illnesses, ”Fauci said, noting that this might not be the case with a new variant.
“If another one comes along who has an equally high transmission capacity but is also much more serious, then we could really be in trouble,” he said.
“People who do not get the vaccine mistakenly think it is theirs. But it is not. It affects everyone, too.”
Moreover, other variants are already appearing. South Korea has reported two cases of the more highly transmissible delta variant of the coronavirus.
This is the first time the country has reported the Delta Plus variant, considered to be a subline of the Delta variant, the Yonhap News Agency reported on Tuesday, citing the Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA). from the country.
Some experts believe that the Delta Plus variant could be more contagious than the Delta variant.
The Lambda variant, which originated in Peru last year, has already been detected in the United States, Axios reported.
