Scott Gottlieb, former Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, predicts that the wave of the Delta variant of COVID-19 across the United States will last only a few more weeks.

Speaking on CNBC, Gottlieb questioned whether the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s new masking guidelines were the right call, and reminded viewers that while COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective, they are not. not an impenetrable shield.

“Ultimately, the vaccine doesn’t make you immune to infection,” said Gottlieb, a doctor. “Some people develop mild, asymptomatic infections even after vaccination. “

Gottlieb also acknowledged that the Delta variant is ‘much more transmissible’ than the original strain of the coronavirus, but questioned whether the spike in cases must necessarily lead to the imposition of masks or vaccine requirements. .

“I don’t think we’re going to get enough bang for our buck by telling people who have been vaccinated to wear masks at all times to make it worth it,” Gottlieb said. “I think we are further along in this Delta wave than we realize. I think in two or three weeks we’ll be done with this.

The former FDA commissioner added that the new guidelines could have a “negligible impact” in reducing the spread of the virus. Numerous surveys have shown that unvaccinated Americans, who account for the overwhelming majority of new cases, hospitalizations and deaths, are much less likely to adhere to the new guidelines than their vaccinated counterparts.

The CDC announced its new guidelines on Tuesday, urging Americans to wear masks indoors where the Delta variant is most prevalent, regardless of vaccine status. The variant is responsible for over 80% of new cases in the country and has increased in areas with low vaccination rates.

“If you are vaccinated in an area with a high prevalence, in contact with the virus, [and] you think you might have the virus because you have mild symptoms of it, be careful get tested, maybe wear a mask, especially if you are around a vulnerable person, ”Gottlieb said on CNBC. “This should be the final direction we give.”
