LOS ANGELES – The number of hospitalizations for COVID-19 fell again on Saturday, October 2 in Los Angeles County, continuing a month-long downward trend.
According to state figures, there were 825 COVID-positive patients in county hospitals on Saturday, up from 862 on Friday. Among these patients, 231 were treated in intensive care, against 234 the day before.
The number of HIV-positive people hospitalized in the county has declined 29-fold over the past 33 days, bringing the number from a summer peak of nearly 1,800. Health officials say about 90% of people who died from COVID-19 had underlying health issues.
The mobile average daily rate of people testing positive for the virus remained low at around 1.7% on Friday.
According to the health department, 41 new COVID infections were reported during the week ending September 19 at skilled nursing facilities – 25 among residents and 16 among staff. During the week of August 8, 123 new cases were reported in skilled nursing facilities.
The county noted, however, that more than half of the 41 cases reported in the week ending September 19 were among staff and residents who were fully vaccinated.
County officials said 88% of trained staff at nursing facilities across the country were fully immunized and 91% of staff. A mandate that went into effect Thursday requires all SNF staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID, while those with medical or religious exemptions must undergo testing twice a week.

Figures Ferrer provided on Thursday showed that 77% of eligible Los Angeles County residents aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine and 69% are fully immunized. Of the county’s 10.3 million people, including those under 12 who are not yet eligible for vaccines, 66% have received at least one dose and 59% are fully immunized.
While Ferrer said the overall numbers are impressive, “millions of eligible residents remain unvaccinated.”
Black residents continue to have the lowest vaccination rate in the county, with only 54% having received at least one dose. Latin American residents have a 62% vaccination rate, while 72% of white residents have at least one dose and 81% of Asians.
Beginning Thursday, at least one dose of vaccine will be required for anyone attending an outdoor mega-event of 10,000 or more in the county, and for anyone attending or working in an indoor bar, brewery, brewery, etc. a cellar or a distillery. Full vaccination will be required in these settings from November 4.
