The rate of infection in every community in the Hudson Valley continues to rise rapidly as the number of new cases threatens to overwhelm hospital systems at its current rate.
More than 1,300 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the Hudson Valley, according to the state Department of Health, which is combating the recent surge in new cases during the second phase of the virus.
A breakdown of the total and new positive cases in the Hudson Valley, by county, as of Wednesday, December 2:
- Westchester: 51,790 (570 new);
- Rockland: 22,038 (203);
- Orange: 17,283 (208);
- Dutch: 7,512 (158);
- Ulster: 3499 (65);
- Putnam: 2973 (89);
- Sullivan: 2220 (10).
A total of six new COVID-19-related deaths have been reported in the past 24 hours in the Hudson Valley.
In the Mid-Hudson region, the positive infection rate of those tested fell from 5.1% on Sunday, November 30, to 5.3% to 5.8%.
The current seven-day average positive infection rate in the region has climbed to 4.94%, one of the highest in the state.
In the Hudson Valley, state-designated COVID-19 “micro-cluster” hotspots have fluctuated over the past month. Positive infection rates, depending on the condition:
Rockland County
- Between Sunday November 8 and Saturday November 14: 3.55 percent;
- Between Sunday November 15 and Saturday November 21: 3.39 percent;
- Sunday, November 22 to Saturday, November 28: 3.94 percent;
- Current seven-day moving average: 4.83%.
Middletown (Orange County)
- Between Sunday November 8 and Saturday November 14: 3.81 percent;
- Sunday, November 15 to Saturday, November 21: 5.41 percent;
- From Sunday November 22 to Saturday November 28: 3.81 percent;
- Current seven-day moving average: 6.03%.
Newburgh (Orange County)
- Between Sunday, November 8 and Saturday, November 14: 8.07 percent;
- Between Sunday November 15 and Saturday November 21: 7.89 percent;
- Sunday, November 22 to Saturday, November 28: 8.57 percent;

Peekskill (Westchester)

“As we continue to move forward through the holiday season, the good news is that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but unfortunately it is still a long way off and we are now faced with a series of challenges to overcome before we go. ‘get there,’ said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. “Not only are the number of COVID-19 cases increasing virtually everywhere, but they are coming from a new source, with almost 70% of cases being traced in households and private gatherings.
On Tuesday, December 1, 193,551 COVID-19 were administered in New York City, resulting in a positive infection rate of 4.63%. There were 150 new hospitalizations statewide, with 24 more patients placed in intensive care and 25 placed in intubation. Sixty-nine new deaths from COVID-19 have been reported.
Statewide since the start of the pandemic, 664,238 positive COVID-19 cases have been confirmed out of 19.7 million who have been tested. There have been a total of 26,889 deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.
“Winning the war against COVID has to be an inclusive process and it is only through everyone working together that we will be successful,” Cuomo added. “As we continue to fight to make the federal plan more inclusive, effective and fair, New Yorkers must do their part to help limit the spread.”
