More than 3,000 new cases of COVID-19 are being reported on Long Island as Nassau and Suffolk counties continue to fight the resurgence of the virus.
In Suffolk County, 1,667 new cases of COVID-19 were reported on Monday, January 11, bringing the total to 117,156 since the start of the pandemic, according to the state Department of Health. There were 1,419 new infections in Nassau, the total rising to 105,497 on Tuesday, January 12.
The number of new cases is the highest of any county in the state outside of New York City.
There were 34 new deaths from COVID-19 in Suffolk, bringing the total to 2,487, while there were 44 new deaths from the virus in Nassau, bringing the total to 2,496.
A total of 2.15 million COVID-19 tests have been administered in Suffolk, including 2.11 million in Nassau.
The number of COVID-19 patients hospitalized on Long Island is 1,612 after dropping to 1,517 over the weekend, although it is still lower than when the virus peaked in April when hospitals reported more than 4,100 patients treated for the virus. .
About 0.06 percent of Long Island’s population is hospitalized, with about 75 percent of the area’s hospital beds still available.
If Long Island is in danger of reaching its 90% hospital capacity rate within three weeks, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has vowed to shut down the entire region.

According to Governor Andrew Cuomo, 196,671 COVID-19 tests were administered in New York on Monday, January 11, resulting in 15,214 positive cases for an infection rate of 7.73%.
There are now 8,926 COVID-19 patients hospitalized statewide, up from 8,590 a week ago, while more than 1,400 are in intensive care units and more than 850 intubated with the virus. There have been 164 new COVID-19 patients reported in the past 24 hours.
Since the pandemic began in March last year, more than 27.7 million New Yorkers have been tested for COVID-19, including 1,155,370 positive for the virus. There have been a total of 32,007 deaths related to COVID-19 reported statewide.
