Long Island’s COVID-19 infection rate is back on the rise after declining slightly over the weekend, with Suffolk and Nassau counties reporting more than 500 newly confirmed infections among area residents .
In Suffolk, 560 new infections have been confirmed, bringing the county’s total to 171,298 since the pandemic began last year. Nassau reported 540 new cases, the total reaching 157,362.
Long Island’s seven-day average infection rate edged up over the weekend, from 4.35% on Friday, March 12, to 4.40% on Sunday, March 14.
The statewide positive infection rate also increased slightly over the weekend, from 3.16% to 3.22%.
As of Friday, March 15, 800 patients with COVID-19 were hospitalized on Long Island, representing 0.03% of the region’s population and leaving 34% of hospital beds still available.
The state also reported that 648 of Long Island’s 850 intensive care beds were occupied by patients with COVID-19, leaving 22% available in the event of another outbreak of the virus.
If Long Island – or any of the state’s other nine regions – is in danger of reaching its 90% hospital capacity rate within three weeks, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has vowed to shut down across the region, although the numbers are moving in the right direction.

According to Cuomo, 127,005 COVID-19 tests were administered in New York City on March 14, resulting in 4,517 new cases for a positive infection rate of 4.57%, down from the previous day.
Thirty-one new COVID-19 patients have been admitted to New York City hospitals, leaving 4,517 patients still treated statewide. There are 923 in intensive care and 614 intubated.
There have been 58 new COVID-19 related deaths reported in the past 24 hours.
“We know the vaccine is the weapon that will win this war, but we also know that one of the most critical actions to stop the spread of COVID is to wash your hands, wear a mask and practice social distancing, ”Cuomo said.
“As the vaccine supply arrives in New York City and more needles enter the guns, we are even closer to achieving our goals, but we must remain vigilant. Until one day we reach the light at the end of the tunnel, we must all stay New York Tough. “
Statewide, a total of 1,734,213 positive COVID-19 cases have been confirmed from more than 41.3 million tests administered. There have been a total of 39,585 virus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic.
