The highly contagious variant of COVID-19, known as “Super Strain”, is now expected to become the main source of infection in the country by March, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) announced on Friday (January 15).
The variant has now been detected in 10 states, and modeling data indicates that the new strain has the potential to increase the trajectory of the pandemic in the United States in the months to come.
The variant’s increased transmissibility ensures universal and increased compliance with mitigation strategies, including distancing and masking, the CDC said in a statement.
“Higher immunization coverage may be needed to protect the public,” the statement said. “Genomic sequence analysis through the National SARS-CoV-2 Strain Surveillance Program will allow a targeted approach to identify variants of concern in the United States.”
COVID-related deaths have now exceeded two million worldwide, including one million in the past three months. Almost 400,000 of the total number of deaths have occurred in the United States.
