Women at any stage of pregnancy are now offered an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna), following a recent recommendation from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization.

The HSE encourages women to speak to their obstetrician, midwife or general practitioner about the possibility of being vaccinated against Covid-19 if they are pregnant and after this consultation, women can be vaccinated at a vaccination center without meet at various locations across the country.

“Evidence shows that Covid-19 vaccines are safe and we now have a lot of experience with immunization during pregnancy,” said Dr Peter McKenna, national clinical director of the HSE National Women & Infants Health Program.

“We recommend that women who are pregnant, trying to have a baby or who may become pregnant in the future be vaccinated against Covid-19. It is important for pregnant women to protect themselves from the Covid-19 virus.

“We encourage women to take this opportunity to benefit from the vaccination and to protect themselves and their babies from discomfort,” said Dr McKenna.

The HSE encourages pregnant women to find all information about immunization for pregnant women on the HSE website and to discuss the immunization with their obstetrician.

Most maternities or units also have a discussion about the vaccine with the women during their booking visit around the 12-14 week stage.

Previously, pregnant women were only offered a vaccine if they were 14 to 36 weeks pregnant.

The locations of the walk-in vaccination centers can be found on the HSE website.
