Some New Yorkers under 65 with underlying health conditions wishing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine have had their appointments canceled by CVS and Walgreens pharmacies, despite being eligible under the laws of the state.
Complaints from New Yorkers mount after pharmacies fail to honor previously booked appointments citing their age, though New York has made people under the age limit with comorbidities eligible for vaccination earlier this month.
Among those with scheduled appointments was longtime Greenburgh City Supervisor Paul Feiner, who took to the city’s website to voice his grievance.
“I have a documented developmental disability – Larsen syndrome – and therefore meet the current requirements for immunization eligibility as per Governor (Andrew) Cuomo’s order of February 5, 2021,” he wrote in a letter to Cuomo’s office.
“I was able to schedule two appointments to get my vaccine at the aforementioned Walgreens – one for each dose, one month apart – which were ultimately canceled by Walgreens on the grounds that I did not meet the age requirements ( 65 and over) under company policy. .
“It’s ridiculous. People under 65 who have health problems deserve the vaccine, as do those over 65 and in better health.”
According to Walgreens representatives, pharmacies “follow CDC guidelines” and do not obey Cuomo’s order.
Questions addressed to the State were addressed to the various pharmacies concerned, which are responsible for making their own vaccination appointments. Those who attempt to book an appointment online are warned that eligibility is limited and that not all states have the same eligibility rules in place.
A spokesperson for the State Department of Health noted that the current requirement is that pharmacies give priority to people over 65, which “has been stated repeatedly by the governor and is clearly set out in several guidance documents and a decree.
