Fifty-eight new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Humboldt County today. The total number of residents who test positive for the virus now stands at 7,169.
Seven new hospitalizations were also reported today. The age groups of people hospitalized are as follows:
- A person in their thirties
- A person in their fifties
- A person in their sixties
- Three 70-year-olds
- A person over 80 years old.
Local health and school officials are urging the community to stay safe over the upcoming Labor Day weekend and reconsider their travel plans and avoid large gatherings, especially if they or their family members are not vaccinated.
Dr Ian Hoffman, Humboldt County Health Officer, said: “In light of record hospitalizations in our county and the urgent need to help reduce COVID-19 exposures in our schools, we call on all those who are not vaccinated, including unvaccinated children, to stay home this holiday weekend. The last thing we want to see in our community is another spike in cases like the one we saw after the winter break. “
Dr. Roberta Luskin-Hawk, Executive Director of Providence in Humboldt County, appealed to the community on behalf of local hospitals. “Due to the high transmissibility of the Delta variant in our county, the safest way to enjoy Labor Day weekend this year is for those who are not vaccinated to avoid travel and large groups. “she said. “Our caregivers ask you to be safe and want to remind you that vaccination is the safest way to protect yourself against the spread of the virus.”
Humboldt County Schools Superintendent Chris Hartley urged the community to do their part to ensure schools remain safe and open. “Humboldt County schools are open and have started the school year with in-person instruction. However, we are walking a fragile line and must do our best collectively to minimize the spread of COVID-19 in our community. We are joining Public Health in encouraging unvaccinated people to limit their travel during the upcoming Labor Day weekend, as this could help reduce the further increase in COVID-19 cases in our county. “
Although some fully vaccinated people are infected with the virus, health officials broadly agree that getting vaccinated is the most effective way to prevent the serious consequences of COVID-19. Immunocompromised people who have received Moderna or Pfizer mRNA vaccine are advised to receive a third dose of the same vaccine to create a strong response to the virus.
Moderna and Pfizer vaccines will be available Thursday, September 2 at the College of the Redwoods Public Health Immunization Clinic. Public Health has scheduled other clinics this week and walk-in visits are welcome. For those who wish to make an appointment in advance, go to MyTurn.ca.gov.

Pfizer is approved for persons 12 years of age and older, and Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are approved for persons 18 years of age and older. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Full protection against vaccination is achieved two weeks after receiving the second dose in a two-dose series or two weeks after receiving a single dose vaccine.
The COVID-19 test site in Hoopa will be closed tomorrow due to the Knob Fire. Testing is not assigned to the Wharfinger building in Eureka and is available from 7 am to 7 pm seven days a week.
