Today, one hundred and thirty-nine new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Humboldt County. The total number of residents who test positive for the virus now stands at 7,308.
Three new hospitalizations were also reported today, including one in their 50s and two in their 60s.
Humboldt County Public Health and other approved local vaccinators on Monday administered 146,856 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. A total of 72,502 county residents are now fully immunized, representing 53.3% of the entire county population and 60.9% of the eligible population aged 12 and over.
Although some fully vaccinated people are infected with the virus, health officials continue to support vaccination as the most effective way to prevent the serious consequences of COVID-19.
To create a strong response to the virus, health officials are advising immunocompromised people who have received Moderna or Pfizer mRNA vaccine to receive an additional dose of the same vaccine 28 days or more after their second dose. People who are immunocompromised should ask their healthcare provider if an extra dose is right for them.
The extra doses aren’t the same as the boosters, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expects to be available this fall, pending further review of the data. If authorized, the boosters would be given no earlier than eight months after the end of the initial vaccination series. The primary beneficiaries would be health care providers, residents of long-term care facilities, and seniors who received their second dose when the vaccine began to roll out. Johnson & Johnson vaccine boosters will likely be recommended later this year, but the CDC says more data is needed. Pfizer is approved for persons 12 years of age and older, and Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are approved for persons 18 years of age and older. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Full protection against vaccination is achieved two weeks after receiving the second dose in a two-dose series or two weeks after receiving a single dose vaccine.
The Humboldt County Joint COVID-19 Information Center will be closed Monday, September 6, on Labor Day. Operations will resume on Tuesday, September 7 and voicemail messages will be resent at that time. OptumServe’s COVID-19 test sites in Eureka and McKinleyville will also be closed on Monday.
