No plan for New York to return to mask mandates, says Mayor Bill de Blasio
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Friday there were no plans to return to mandatory mask wearing like what was recently replenished in Los Angeles County, as the highly contagious Delta variant of the new coronavirus is spreading. De Blasio pointed to the hospitalization rate of 0.31 per 100,000 people.
“We don’t intend to change course at this point, but we will be constantly monitoring the data to see if any adjustments are needed,” he said. “(It’s) a very low rate, and it’s been low for the last few weeks.”
Yankees-Red Sox game to be held on Friday after tests show no new cases of COVID
The Yankees’ post-All-Star opener against the Boston Red Sox had to be postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests among six New York Yankees players, though as of now teams are planning to play on Friday. Pitchers Jonathan Loaisiga, Nestor Cortes Jr. and Wandy Peralta tested positive, with pending tests for Aaron Judge, Kyle Higashioka and Gio Urshela later confirmed as positive. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that no new positive cases have been reported since Thursday afternoon, and the players underwent another round of testing Friday afternoon before the first pitch. As a result of these tests, Major League Baseball said the game would go as planned. The postponement of Thursday’s game will be made up for in a split doubles schedule at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday, August 17.
Monster Jam returns as MetLife Stadium’s first 100% capacity event since pandemic began
Despite concerns over the increase in COVID cases, Monster Jam returns to New Jersey on Saturday as the first full-capacity event at 100% MetLife stadiums since the start of the pandemic. The event will have the largest capacity in the tri-state region for more than a year, with an expected attendance of 40,000 people. Spectators will not be required to wear masks or show proof of vaccination. Tailgating will also be allowed. Concessions will be open, and while masks are recommended, this is only a recommendation.
New York lawmaker against mandatory COVID-19 vaccines for colleges and universities
A Republican lawmaker voices her opposition to mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations at New York colleges and universities. MP Jodi Giglio (R-Riverhead) held a press conference on Friday to denounce plans to force all students attending state colleges and universities this fall to take the vaccine as a condition of enrollment.
“With what we now know about the virus and the need to vaccinate young people, students shouldn’t be forced to choose between getting the vaccine or going to college,” Giglio said. “Vaccines are still seen as experimental, and we shouldn’t force them on this extremely low-risk population. “

New LA County Health Order Requires Face Coverings Indoors As COVID Cases Rise
Citing the continued increase in transmission of COVID-19, the Los Angeles County Public Health Department is implementing a mandate requiring residents to wear masks indoors, regardless of their immunization status. The county previously only recommended wearing the mask indoors. The new mandate will take effect at 11:59 p.m. Saturday night, officials said Thursday.
