Covid-19 US: New York man in 1970s dies 25 minutes after being vaccinated

An elderly man collapsed and died Sunday morning in New York City, shortly after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, officials revealed Monday.

The man, who was 70, fell when leaving the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan just 25 minutes after receiving his injection, said Dr Howard Zucker, New York State Commissioner of Health, in a statement.

Security on site and first responders rushed to his side within seconds, but the man, who has yet to be named, was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after.

It is currently not known whether the man’s death is linked to the vaccine, an investigation is underway.

Side effects of the vaccine are considered extremely rare, with these few cases most often related to an allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.

“The first indications are that the man has not had any allergic reactions to the vaccine,” Zucker said in his statement, however.

The man’s sudden collapse followed a mandatory 15-minute observation period, during which he “ showed no adverse reactions or distress, ” Zucker said.

The FDNY said the patient was taken to hospital by Senior Care just before 11 a.m. on Sunday, where he died shortly after arriving.

The identity of the man has not yet been revealed by the authorities. It is also not known what type of COVID-19 vaccine he received.

The Javits Center and Zucker’s office have yet to return a request for comment to DailyMail.com on the matter.

In his statement, Zucker stressed that he and other public health experts believe the vaccine “ is safe and, combined with continued vigilance, including wearing a mask and social distancing, will end this pandemic ”.

“I encourage all eligible New Yorkers to get the vaccine,” Zucker continued.

The Javits Center opened as a mass vaccination site in January and is one of several sites in the New York City area. It was originally used as a field hospital after the first coronavirus pandemic last spring.

So far, nearly a million people in New York City have been vaccinated, with 1.5 million residents having received their first doses statewide.

Across the United States, the daily number of people getting vaccinated now far exceeds the number of people infected, with the country receiving an average of 1.3 million vaccines per day.

So far, nearly 42 million doses have been administered in total.

At least one dose of a vaccine has been administered to 31,579,100 million people, equivalent to 9.6% of the population.

Just over 9,147,000 Americans have now received both doses of a vaccine, or 2.78% of the population.

Adverse effects of the vaccine are considered extremely rare, these few cases being most often related to allergic reactions.

Since the vaccine rollout began in December, however, there have been a handful of so far unexplained deaths involving people who have recently received a COVID vaccine.

Over the weekend, Virginia Minister Drene Keyes, 58, died on Friday less than a day after receiving a dose of Pfizer vaccine at a Warsaw clinic and falling ill.

Officials said they did not know the cause of his death, any underlying condition Keyes may have had that may have contributed to it, and said there was no evidence to suggest his death was linked to vaccination.

`` The first indications are that the man has not had any allergic reaction to the vaccine, '' Zucker said in his statement, however.

Much like Sunday’s incident in New York City, Keyes remained in the clinic for 15 minutes after the shooting, as recommended, before returning to the clinic later that day.

She was rushed to VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital, where she died on Saturday.

“Preliminary results indicate that the cause of death was not anaphylaxis, but it will take several weeks for more information to become available,” Warsaw Police Chief Joan Kent said.

“ We can confirm that the death occurred within hours of receiving the vaccine, but that does not prove that it is related. We are currently investigating and do not yet know the cause of death.

Kent continued, “Our hearts are with the family during this heartbreaking time,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement. “The CDC continues to closely monitor the safety of all vaccines and we are actively working with officials in Virginia to fully investigate the situation.

Likewise, in California last month, Tim Zook, a 60-year-old radiology technologist at the South Coast Global Medical Center in Santa Ana, died on Jan. 7 two days after receiving his second dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

He wrote on Facebook on the day of his vaccination that he had “ never been so excited about getting vaccinated before ” and celebrating being “ fully vaccinated ”.

However, within hours, the father-of-three reportedly suffered from an apparent adverse reaction, telling colleagues he had severe stomach pain and difficulty breathing.

After his symptoms worsened, his colleagues took him to the emergency room where he was put on a ventilator four hours after his arrival.

The Orange County coroner said Zook’s cause of death is currently inconclusive and further toxicology tests will take months. If there is a correlation with the vaccine, the office said it will notify the OC Health Care Agency.

In a statement to DailyMail.com at the time, a spokesperson for Pfizer said the company was aware of Zook’s death and was also investigating the case.

Pfizer said: “ Our immediate thoughts are with the bereaved family. We closely monitor all of these events and collect relevant information to share with global regulatory authorities.

“ Based on ongoing safety reviews by Pfizer, BioNTech and health authorities, BNT162b2 maintains a positive benefit-risk profile for the prevention of COVID-19 infections. Serious adverse events, including deaths unrelated to the vaccine, are unfortunately likely to occur at a rate similar to that of the general population ”.

Zook’s wife, Rochelle Zook, told the Registry that her family “ didn’t blame any drug company. ”

“My husband loved what he did,” she says. “He worked in hospitals for 36 and a half years. He believed in vaccines. I’m sure he would take this vaccine again and he would want the public to take it.

“But when someone has symptoms two and a half hours after a vaccine, it’s a reaction. What else could have happened? We would like the public to know what happened to Tim, so he did not die in vain. Severe reactions are rare. In reality, COVID is a much more lethal force than the reactions of the potential vaccine itself.

“ The message is, be careful, take the vaccine – but officials need to do more research. We need to know the cause. Vaccines should be as safe as possible. Every life counts.

For the first time in three months on Sunday, the United States reported fewer than 100,000 daily new cases of COVID-19, with hospitalizations also decreasing as the vaccine rollout gains momentum.

Just over 96,000 new cases and 1,474 deaths were reported nationwide on Sunday, according to a count from the COVID Tracking Project.

The latest figures brought the US totals to more than 26.99 million cases and 463,339 deaths to date.

Hospitalizations also fell with 81,439 patients admitted Sunday – the fourth day in a row with fewer than 90,000 after two months above that threshold.
