PUNE: Ambassadors and envoys from 100 countries will visit the Serum Institute of India and Gennova Biopharmaceuticals Ltd here on December 4 amid the coronavirus outbreak and the vaccine race to fight the infection, a senior official said on Tuesday .
Pune Divisional Commissioner Saurabh Rao said it was possible Prime Minister Narendra Modi would also visit Pune, adding that “if the visit takes place it would be to the Indian Serum Institute and Gennova Biophramaceuticals “.
The Central Drug Standard Control Organization has licensed the manufacture of the Covid-19 vaccine for preclinical testing, examinations and analyzes to seven companies, two of which are the Serum Institute of India and Gennova Biopharmaceuticals.
The prime minister’s visit, if it takes place, would aim to review the status of the coronavirus infection vaccine candidate and learn about its mechanisms for launching, producing and distributing it, Rao said.
“We have not received any official communication from the PMO. However, we are preparing for the likely visit (of the PM),” Rao told reporters.
He said the ambassadors’ visit was due to take place on November 27, but has now been postponed to December 4.
Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine maker, has partnered with global pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford for the Covid-19 vaccine.
