Interpol issued a global warning on Wednesday that organized crime groups could target upcoming coronavirus vaccination campaigns by peddling fake shots and stealing supplies, according to reports.
The international police agency, headquartered in France, said it had alerted law enforcement in its 194 member countries to the possibility that organized crime networks could take advantage of the health crisis during the deployment. vaccines, Reuters reported.
“As governments prepare to deploy vaccines, criminal organizations plan to infiltrate or disrupt supply chains,” Interpol Secretary General Juergen Stock said.
“Criminal networks will also target unsuspecting members of the public through bogus websites and fake medicine, which could pose a significant risk to their health and even their lives,” he added.
In July, Interpol warned of the proliferation of fake coronavirus test kits and other medical products as countries rushed to stock up during the outbreak, according to Agence France-Presse.
The agency’s cybercrime unit recently surveyed around 3,000 websites related to online pharmacies selling illicit drugs and other medical supplies, 1,700 of which also used phishing techniques to try to trick people into they transmit personal data.
“It is important to be vigilant, skeptical and cautious, as usually are offers that sound too good to be true,” the agency said.
